Giving Back
Grandparents are special. For me, they have been guru, philosopher, powerhouse of wisdom, constant source of inspiration and epitome of compassion. I have been fortunate to have babuji’s presence in my life till the age of 40 and bai’s (grandmom) till earlier this year. Not a single day goes without living by their teachings and values.
We have grown up listening to adhyatmik conversations between both of them all the time. Bai never went to school but knew entire Gita, Sundarkand and other ancient scriptures by heart. Alongside relentless gau seva, community upliftment was her constant mission – skilling young girls in the nearby bastis, supplying ration to homes for the orphans and elderly, teaching Gita to neighbourhood children, using her artistic skills to raise funds for the causes she supported – she was always engaged in enriching lives of those around her.
She believed education, family values and skilling are more important for girl child than learning to cook or manage household chores. That’s how she raised my sister.
The most fascinating thing about her was yearning to learn something new, even in her 90s. That led me to the idea of setting up an education fund to support young girls, whose higher education is a challenge due to financial constraints.
