The Comfort of Routine Is Priceless

There is something about doing the same thing every day that brings me peace. My world has a rhythm. It is not exciting in the way people usually mean. But it is steady and feels right.

I once read in some book or blog: write down your dream day, then try to live it every day. That made so much sense to me. So I did it. I sat down and wrote the kind of day I want to live every day.

It is pretty simple. I like waking up before the sun. I like sitting in silence for a bit. Praying and expressing gratitude. Letting the day begin on a gentle note.

Then I sit with my cup of my favourite coffee and pen down my thoughts – my journal, my feelings, whatever is on my mind. Lately, I have been writing a lot. Blogs, little stories, moments from my life, things I have observed. It feels good to put it all down.

After that, I hit the gym or go for a run. Moving my body early gives me energy and clears my head. It is a rhythm I have come to love.

Then I get to work. In the mornings, I block out a couple of hours to do focused work. No meetings, no messages, no distractions. Just me, a clear mind, and whatever needs my full attention. That is when I get my best work done.

After that, I switch gears. I check in with my team, my emails, respond to what is needed, offer support wherever I can.

I carve out time every day for things that fill me up. My hobby. Breathing routines. Reading, even if it’s just for half an hour. Journaling again, sometimes. And yes – time to do nothing at all. Just sit, breathe, stare at the ceiling, scroll, whatever. That stillness counts, too.

This way, I make sure I am spending the most time with the people I love and doing the things I care about. I have almost cut out everything I don’t like or don’t want. What is left is enough.

At some stage in life, I think everyone should try to reach that sweet spot where you can easily say no to anything that drains you and readily say yes to everything that delights you. That is the real destination postcard.

One thing I have realised – it is hard to know everything I might like. But it is pretty easy to spot what I don’t. So I started there. I began with elimination. I stopped eating foods that is not good for my health. I stopped giving time to conversations or people that leave me feeling empty. I stopped watching things I don’t enjoy like political debates that only stir up noise. Saying no to what I don’t want gave me space to figure out what I do.

I eat at the same times every day. I go to bed at the same time, too. Might sound boring, but I feel more alive now than I ever did running around chasing one plan after another.

And the bonus is I am saving lot of money.

No impulsive shopping sprees. No expensive dinners twice a week. No trips just because the internet said I need a break. I still take wonderful and exotic trips and I do treat myself but I am not doing it on autopilot. I am making conscious choices.

You know what else I have gained from this kind of life. A clear mind.

I am not constantly forgetting things. I am not ending each day wondering where the time went. My days have shape. I know what is coming. There is no chaos or rush.

It might look boring from the outside. But for me, it is powerful.

This so-called ‘boring’ life is my superpower. I don’t need parties. I don’t need constant plans. I am an introvert. I love quiet mornings, thoughtful conversations, early nights, good food, and deep rest.

This wasn’t always true. I had to grow into it. But now that I am here, I am not giving it up.

I still ride roller coasters sometimes. I still do ‘fun’ things. But I don’t live in the high, and I don’t crash afterward either.
