The Growth Law


In 2012, my body forced me to listen. Years of neglect, a car crash, and a nerve injury brought pain that didn’t go away. Even short climbs made my knees ache. My back ached when seated and blood tests flashed warning signs. The doctor said, ‘Change now or face serious problems.’ That was the pivot. 

I walked for ten minutes that day. The next week, I added ten more. After three months, the pain eased. At six, I slept better. At twelve, my blood sugar fell into range. Over twelve years, those walks turned into something bigger. My lab results now say I’m metabolically a decade younger than I am on paper. 

That came from one thing. Consistency. No single breakthrough did it. Repetition did. The same effort, again and again, allowed time and biology to work with me instead of against me.

This pattern wasn’t new. I had followed it since 1994, when I earned my first pay check and chose to save something each month, no matter what. The amount changed.₹1,000 in lean months, ₹5,00,000 in strong ones but the act of investing never changed. Over time, that habit built a retirement fund that can carry me for three decades. Money grows when new money enters and old money earns more. A ₹100 investment at 10% becomes ₹110, then ₹121, then ₹133. The power lies in the compounding, in time stacking effort on top of effort. That same law works on health, learning, relationships, skills, anywhere effort can be repeated.

British cycling proved this idea on a world stage. They didn’t reinvent the sport. They looked for 1% improvements in every area. Bike tires, seat position, athlete sleep, even how they washed their hands. No single change won the medals, but all of them together did. Years of tiny upgrades turned a struggling team into Olympic champions. That’s what consistent action does. It builds strength that holds under pressure. It creates results that last longer than a moment.

Looking back, the gains feel slow in the moment but obvious in hindsight. It’s like planting a seed and forgetting about it, then one day finding shade where there used to be sun. There’s something steadying about routines that don’t chase quick wins but quietly build a better life behind the scenes. You don’t always notice the change happening. One day, though, you realise the pain isn’t there, or the numbers in your account look different, or you’re waking up rested. It doesn’t feel like a transformation. It just feels like you’ve arrived somewhere better without rushing to get there.

There’s no single formula. What worked for me may not look exactly the same for you. But if there’s one thread that keeps showing up. Whether in sport, in science, in health, or in finance. 

It’s this: small steps done often shape outcomes that effort alone can’t force. That rhythm of showing up, doing what you can, and letting time carry the rest.
