The Mentors at the Growth Retreat
Only 3 weeks to go for The Growth Retreat, a networking event, I am hosting at Rishikesh from 8-11th December 2022. Every week we bring you a write up by one of the esteemed guest speakers of the Retreat, giving you a sneak peak of what they will be sharing with the participants of the Retreat.
Digital for good
by Shubho Sengupta
In the last few years, there has been a lot of negativity about the effect of technology on society, especially social media.
These are just a few:
- Fake news that leads to violence
- Manipulation of thought
- Cyberbullying, Trolling
- Terrorism
- Low self esteem, insecurity
- Data theft
However, in parallel, social media has also been a force for tremendous global good. It has made us more aware of our similarities, fostered inclusiveness and enriched democracy and equality.
The top 3 ‘goods’:
- Social media gives voice to minorities and vulnerable sections, incl senior citizens
- People are collaborating for good on social media. (Covid relief, culture & arts)
- Social media has a stake in improving society. (Global consensus on Environment)
Moving forward, this is an outline of what brands, corporates, civil society and govt can do collectively:
Focus on grassroots solutions to environmental issues .
Give a platform to Gen Z as coming change agents
Tackle mental health problem collectively
Body positivity esp amongst youth
More inclusive society, less isolation
Much can be done at an individual and collective level. The time to start building an open inclusive positive society is now.
